The TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) test has been in use since 1964 and has been taken by more than 20 million candidates. Currently, about 800.000 students choose to take part in a TOEFL test each year. The TOEFL test primarily measures the ability to use and understand American English as it is used at universities. Almost all US universities require a TOEFL test score; the more famous a university, the higher the TOEFL test score required. Many universities in other English-speaking countries also accept a TOEFL test score. Therefore, the test is taken by students who want to study in an English speaking country.
Meanwhile, however, a TOEIC score tends to be accepted alongside the TOEFL test score as well.
Sprachenmarkt has many schools on offer which prepare you for the TOEFL test. Sprachenmarkt is also an official ETS test center.
We take part on every test (around 40 a year). In Stuttgart we are the closest test center for 6 million people. Therefore we have high capacities, but even thos can be filled fast in busy times.
Since March 2011 we also have a TOEFL testcenter in Munich und April 2012 we opened one in Leipzig.

Versions of the test
Since October 2005, the TOEFL iBT (internet based test) has gradually been introduced. The new test consists of four parts and measures your abilities in the fields of:
- Listening
- Reading
- Speaking
- Writing
Testing lasts for about 4 - 4 1/2 hours. There is a compulsory break of 10 minutes between part 2 and 3.
A nice video, with examples of the questions, will you find in the TOEFL Video Library.
Registration
The registration for the test and payment of the fee (USD 245,- by credit card or PayPal) is possible at http://www.toefl.org. Please note that you can name up to 4 universities where your score report will be sent. Sending the score report to any additional institution will incur a charge of ca. USD 18,-.
When registering, you can choose a test centre and date (Friday, Saturday or Sunday).
Results
In the TOEFL iBT, you can achieve a maximum of 120 (30 for each section) points.
The Computer Based Test (CBT) used a scale of 0-300, the Paper Based Test a scale of 310-677 points. In case your university of choice still uses the old system, here are two examples:
550 PBT = 213 CBT = 79 iBT
600 PBT = 250 CBT = 100 iBT
The results are available 3 - 4 weeks after the test.
The fee includes:
- one printed and one "online examinee score report"
- up to 4 official score reports which will be sent out to the institutions indicated before the test.
The institutions must be named by 22:00 (local time) on the day prior to the test.
ETS will send out the results to participants and institutions 15 working days after the test. Therefore, you should allow for 4 weeks including time for mail delivery time.
